Where’s The Oak?

An American Chardonnay with no oak? Can it be? It can, and it’s from the good folks at St. Supery, whom we are big fans of. Their Sauvignon Blanc’s are wonderful as are their Cab’s, and if your bottle of either says Dollarhide, you are in for a treat…
So there I was in the market, minding my own business, picking up some eggs, milk, bread and, oh! How about some Chardonnay? There on the top shelf, was the bottle in question, a 2005 St. Supery Oak Free Chardonnay. I think they were selling the 06, but as always, I reached all the way to the back of the shelf, and pulled out the lone 05. It had been waiting there, patiently for my arrival.
I got it home and popped the cork.
The aromas of pear and apple filled my living room. Shortly thereafter, flavors of honeydew and pears filled my mouth… with a nice, creamy finish. I have to admit, I didn’t miss the oak. It was crisp and fresh and clean.
In all the commotion however, I forgot the bread at the market. I don’t miss the bread right now, any more than I miss the oak…
