5 Bucks? Really?!!

Ok, while I admit to being the guy that’s always looking for a good deal, I’m generally wary of wine that’s too cheap as it usually disappoints. So when I popped into K & L Hollywood today to pick up a few things, I didn’t know what to make of this $5.00 wine.
The 2006 Cave du Vin Blanc Blanc de Morgex “Rayon” is a nice, easy-drinking white, from a region in Italy I’ve never heard of (Valle d’Aosta. I’m told it lies in the Alps in the westernmost part of Italy, full of steep mountain slopes and, they don’t speak Itallian there, they speak French!?!)
The grape is the Prie Blanc, a local variety that not only withstands the cold climate, but clings particularly well to the high, rocky mountain slopes.
Its kinda like a sauv blanc, but not grape-fruity or grassy, more of a crisp, ever-so-subtle sweet lemon flavor. An easy drinker, perfect for a Tuesday night when one is feasting on a mixed-greens salad with heirloom tomatoes, blue cheese and chicken salad…. which is exactly what I’m doing as I type this (i’ve got to conserve my energy and my taste-buds for tomorrow night). I mean, if you like a crisp, white wine, you’d have to go really, really deep into the forest to find a stick big enough to beat this deal…
I’m not sure how the K&L folks can offer this for $4.99. I’m thinking maybe the owners won a few cases in a poker game, or perhaps the wine ‘fell off of a wine truck’. Regardless, if you’re near a K&L or have the internet, you should pick some up… For next Tuesday, with chicken salad…
Hey. Great stuff. I like your spin on this.
