Superbowl: What Did You Pour?

I’m still recovering from yesterday’s festivities. It turned into a great afternoon with lots of good food and wine. If only I had poured one less glass…
We went to my friend Doug’s house, knowing that when he said he would ‘throw something together’ it would no doubt be a gourmet experience. He didn’t disappoint.

First up was a nice plate of hot wings. Served with fresh blue cheese dressing, they were spicy!!! Per my blog on Saturday, we felt that a nice Sauvignon Blanc would be the way to go, so we opened up the 2007 St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc. It’s light with lime and grapefruit on the nose. In my mouth I tasted those same citrus flavors with a tiny bit of grass that led into a nice, crisp finish. Just what I needed to put out the flames that were lingering in my mouth.

At halftime, he brought out a couple of trays of sliders. For those of you unfamiliar, sliders are little hamburgers, but in this case, they packed a punch; lots of BIG flavors. They were served on little individual french-roll-like slider buns, with aged cheddar and red wine/balsamic carmelized onion relish on top and arugula with lemon and olive oil on the bottom. In the middle was a blend of ground beef and ground pork, laced with fresh rosemary. Lots of big flavors called for a big wine…
That wine was the 2004 Robert Foley Vineyards Napa Valley Petite Sirah. This inky wine is big, rich and jammy. The nose is a blend of earth and vanilla, lots of blueberry and blackberry on the palette, with strong, structured tannins. The decanter helped it get it’s stride.
After the game was over, we went back for more sliders and opened up a new bottle for the encore. This one was a Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Napa: 2006 Schulz “Samuel’s Cuvee” Red Wine. Aromas of bright, red fruit on the nose took me into a mouthful of raspberries and a hint of blueberries.

All in all it was a fantastic day: a good game, a great meal and some great wine. Hope yours was good too…
