Petite? Hardly…

I have to admit, I’m still trying to figure out in regards to Syrah and Petite Sirah: a) why are they spelled differently? b) While they have similarities, why do they seem so different and c) why petite sirah is, well, completely NOT petite!
What I do know is, I really enjoy a good Petite Sirah.. They go great with a hearty beef dish, and are equally appealing in a glass by the fireplace.
I recently tried the EOS 2005 Reserve Petite Sirah, from Paso Robles, CA, and for 20 bucks or so, I was a great, BIG, bottle of wine.
Dark purple in color, it has wonderful aromas of blueberry, molasses and smoky oak, and big, jammy fruit flavors of raspberry and blueberries; a nice long finish as well. This sounds silly, but for me, it’s like having a slice of blueberry pie in a glass…. Delicious.
