Lost In The Supermarket

As of late, I feel like I’ve been spending endless hours in the supermarket. Several of the trips have been because I’ve legitimately forgotten something but I think a few of the visits have been to feel safe. In a time when the world around me is scary and unpredictable, the market seems warm and safe and I can control the contents of my shopping cart. Of course I’ve picked up a bottle or two in my grocery store journeys which can be a challenge.

One of those recent market-bought wines was the 2004 Hanna Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Hanna, located in Sonoma County, is one of those names you can trust when it comes to supermarket wines. This fruit for this particular cab was sourced from the Red Ranch in the Alexander Valley area.
I poured a healthy glass of this deep reddish-purple wine and caught a whiff of plums and dark berries with a dash of pepper and a pinch of some green herbal/minty stuff. In my mouth the fruit was brighter: Bing Cherries, oakey berries and chock full o’ spices. Nice mouth-feel and well-integrated acidity and tannins. Overall a very pleasant drink and a good score from the limited selection of the market; normally around $29 but on sale for under 20 bucks. A good wine to drink with some roast beef- I had it with a nice grilled hamburger.
I don’t think the folks that scanned the bottle at the register were aware, but Wine Enthusist gave it a 90.
