Deal O’ The Week
One of the challenges I’ve found is sticking to a budget when it comes to wine. In my journeys, I’ve gotten spoiled, tasting some amazing estate and reserve wines in Napa and Sonoma. However, those wines when bought at the store can quickly drain the bank account.
That’s why when I happen upon a wine that holds up to my now spoiled palette, but doesn’t break, I get really excited, and look forward to sharing.
The latest bottle that falls into that category comes from Paso Robles, a lesser known California appellation about four hours North of Los Angeles on highway 101. It’s a warm area, known for Zinfandel and Syrah, but today’s wine is actually a Cabernet.
Robert Hall vineyards is located East of the 101 on highway 46. They sell a variety of wines, but I found this 2005 cab for 12.99 at Trader Joes in the Los Angeles area. I’m told it’s around the same price at local supermarkets and a bit more on the winery’s website. (www.roberthallwinery.com).
It’s hard to find a good cab for under 15 bucks, and this bottle is surprisingly big, with flavors of plum and currant, and a nicely balanced accent of chocolate and spice, finishing off with smooth tannins. The label is deceiving; pretty basic design, although he bottle is big and heavy. Don’t pass this one up…
Anyone else tried this bargain of a cab? We’d love to hear from you… Or if you’ve tried another cab in the ‘under 15’ range that you like.. Let us know!
