Don’t Spill Wine On My Iphone!

I remember back in 2004 (ahh the good ol’ days), I would use a program on my TREO to lookup wines when I was in the grocery store, to see if they were any good.  Truthfully, the database was pretty thin, and rarely maintained.  Fast forward to 2008, the year of the Iphone 3G!Since getting my Iphone, I’ve relied on my subscription to Wine Spectator online to lookup wines in the grocery store.  It’s a great resource and they’ve recenly come out with a mobile version.

If you don’t have a subscription for WS, here’s a great new program for the Iphone, Cor.kz. It’s easy to use and takes advantage of CellarTracker’s vast community tasting notes.

They say that virtually any bottle of wine can be found using Cor.kz  allowing you to check a bottle you’re thinking about buying at the market or ordering in a restaurant.  Typing in the name of the wine gets you reviews and wine ratings from experts and from the huge CellarTracker community of wine drinkers, with the ability to find even some of the rarest of bottles.

The CellarTracker and Twitter and Facebook/Twitter integrations allow you to keep track of your wine collection and tell your friends what you’re drinking in real time. A GREAT APP available at the Itunes app store for $4.99.

By the way, spilling wine on the Iphone is no joke.  If you get liquid in the Iphone, they can tell (via a couple of carefully placed pieces of litmus paper). There is a solution:  I recently dropped my Iphone in water, and quickly toweled it off, only to find the screen fizzing and cutting out.  It died…  But I put it under my desk lamp overnight, and voila.. good as new.  You can also put it in a bag of rice…

Truth be told that works for water… I think the sugars etc. in red wine might truly kill the Iphone…  Be careful.

Why would you use a $4.99 app instead of just logging into CellarTracker on the same iphone?

A valid question; I think the key here is that Cor.kz is optimized for the Iphone interface, the small screen, etc. Is it worth the price? I guess it depends… I really like the social aspect with Twitter integration, and it sounds like the Cor.kz team is busy working on new features.
