Wine Deals: A Good Time To Invest In First Growth Bordeaux, Or Hit The Sales Rack…

The current economic situation has caused the prices of some high-end wines to drop.. even to half off of the normal price; so instead of $1,100, you can be the proud owner of a bottle of 2005 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild from Bordeaux for only $549. Now, that’s still a pretty hefty price tag, but it’s a steal considering it was twice as much just a few months ago. The 2007 vintage sells for even less at $383. Both vintages are highly rated by Robert Parker. Bottom line: with the stock market way down, unemployment way up, and the economy wobbly at best, most people are wary about dropping big money on big ticket wine. I recently spoke ‘my guy’ at the local wine shop, who told me that people are still buying wine, they’re just buying less expensive bottles.
My tip: go to your favorite local wine store, or even the supermarket, and look for what’s on sale. I’ve managed to find quite a few interesting wines that way for a great price.
There are also some great online options for good deals on wine: 1) The WineSpies- a great site that offers a daily wine deal 2) WineWoot- an off-shoot of the internet deal site Woot that features a daily wine special (and sometimes shipping is only 99 cents) and 3) my favorite: the Inventory Clearance section of the K&L Wine Merchant’s online store.
If you’ve found any great deals recently, feel free to comment. Glasses in hand, we weather the economic storm…
UPDATE: Since reading the article and posting, I’ve looked online, and the best I’ve been able to find the 05 Rothschild for is $779. Not that I’m looking to buy… Just window shopping..!
