Safe Place, Safe Place, Safe Place…

…saying it over and over as I close my eyes tightly and cover my ears. I don’t want to repeat what I just read. But I can’t shirk my responsibility as a wine blogger, so I’m going to type this once and then never read it, speak it or think of it again.
The horror that I speak of is this article at BBCNews.com, which details the amount of calories contained in alcoholic beverages, including of course a glass of wine. In case you were wondering, that number is 120; the same as a slice of cake! According to the article, 4 of 10 ‘Brits’ surveyed were not aware of the caloric punch that an alcoholic beverage packs (the survey was conducted amongst 2,000 adults in England).
Noted in the story: “the average wine drinker consumed 2,000 calories each month. Over the course of a year, that is the equivalent of eating an extra 38 roast beef dinners”. Also, “It’s not only the calories in the drinks themselves that can help to pile on the pounds, we’re also more likely to eat fatty foods when we’ve had one too many.”
Finally, the article pointed out that a pint of cider has 200 calories, which is equivalent to ‘beans on toast’, which begs the question: What wine pairs with ‘beans on toast’?

Yes! I read that, too!
I wonder now how we can eliminate 120 calories from my daily diet in order to actually have that glass of wine. I could leave out the veggie? I can CERTAINLY leave out the cake!
I hear ya’ Janet. In order to accomodate my ‘glass of wine’ I think I might need to eliminate a little more… I may need to stop eating lunch.
