Inaugural Wines Epilogue

Two weeks ago I blogged about the nice wine choices available to the folks attending the Inaugural lunch (I wasn’t able to attend). Then last week I talked about President Obama’s apparent affinity for wine, which the wine industry is certainly happy about. My final thought on the presidential inauguration is actually an interesting trip down memory lane…
While perusing the inaugural website I found this neat little link that listed the menu (and wine list) from a handful of the recent past inaugural luncheons.
Highlights include Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay being served for both George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, Sterling and Mondavi being poured for Bush Sr. and Korbel providing the bubbly to all, except for Reagan’s 1985 luncheon, where Shramsberg got the call.
It appears that all the selections were American wines, in keeping with President Lyndon Johnson’s decree that only American wines be served at White House state dinners.
And by the way, credit must be given to Wine Labels Project for the Obama wine label pictured above. Check out their site where you’ll find “The World Through a Wine Label. Art. Social Commentary. Politics. Whatever.”
