I’ll Take Mine To Go…

I honesty can’t think of too many times that I’ve said to a waiter:  “I’m so full, I simply cannot have another drop of wine.  May I get this wrapped up to go?”  But if that’s a frequent conversation for you, you might want to consider moving to Iowa…

The state Senate in Iowa has endorsed a bill that will allow restaurant patrons to get their half-full bottle of wine packed in a doggy-bag for the ride home.

The bags are seal-able, and if the consumer is stopped by a state trooper, the office can see that the wine was sealed by an employee of an eatery, and that the driver is safely transporting the wine back home.

Iowa Senator Rich Olive thinks that allowing a patron to bring home the unfinished wine could actually lower the incidence of drunk driving.  “Restaurant-goers may be less inclined to drain a bottle of wine if they can safely tote home a half- or quarter-bottle. If we can keep people from drinking too much alcohol and then driving — I think that’s a very fine thing for us to do,” Olive said.”

I read this news with raised eyebrows.. and decided to dig a little deeper.  If found that in fact, a California -based company manufactures these specialized doggy bags.  Their name?  Wine Doggy Bag, of course.

Bags are for sale on their site, where you can also check to see if your state is a “Wine Doggy Bag State”.  Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming are all on the list so far; hopefully Iowa will be joining them soon.
