China Wine?

An interesting story came across my desk today regarding winemaking in China. I had no idea…
According to author Ron Gluckman, wine production is up in China, and while historically, Chinese wine has “…elicited chuckles from viticulturists and consumers alike…” the wine that’s being produced now is no joke.
The Huadong vineards is one that’s leading the charge. Using modern, state-of-the-art equipment, they’re producing chardonnay that’s won gold medals in Europe, along with a riesling and two reds. They’ve seen their case production increase dramatically in the last few years. All this in what can potentially be the world’s largest wine market.
Apparently China has over 160,000 acres of vines nationwide, but “…the future for wine making, most believe, is in Shandong Province, which lies, roughly along the same parallel as California’s esteemed Napa Valley.”

Hi Neil,
One of the more interesting places for wine here in China is in Xinjiang. Alain Leroux, a French wine maker who has been in China for 13 years, just did his first harvest there and says the sugar in the grapes was so high it reminded him of fruit from Chateauneuf de Pape. More details about it via the link below. Note also that there are several operations in Xinjiang now making wine for the North American and European markets.
Cheers, Jim
