You read that right… Notorious for having red teeth on the weekends, I am certainly familiar with red wine stains. But white wine stains?  Apparently so.

That according to a study conducted by NYU’s College of Dentistry and posted here at WebMD. Red wine of course is known for staining teeth, it contains a hard-core pigment called chromagen.  However the acid in both white and red wine affects the surface of the teeth, causing grooves and rough spots.  Once the grooves and rough spot are there, other foods and beverages like coffee and tea (tea also contains  chromagen by the way).  So Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc drinkers, take heed.

Naturally, the study suggests that the best way to prevent the stains is to use a toothpaste with a whitening agent.

What I found most interesting is the method in which the study was conducted.  According to the article:  “Dental scientists soaked cows’ teeth in either white wine, red wine, or water for an hour and then immersed the choppers in tea.”

The article wasn’t clear as to whether or not the teeth were still in the cow’s mouth.  If they were, I’d have to say those cows were pretty patient, but then again, after a couple of glasses of wine, I guess they would be.
