Wine Bottles Wobble But They Don’t Fall Down…

Living in Los Angeles, I’m no stranger to earthquakes, as a matter of fact we had a little tremblor that was felt in Santa Monica this Friday evening, as I was picking up my sushi (I’ll blog about that later). Everyone says the big one is coming, and we’ve all got to be prepared. I’ve got bottled water and a first aid kit, so I’ll be okay, but what are we going to do about our delicate bottles of vino?
Researchers at Oregon State University have come up with the answer, and Newood Display Fixture Mfg. Co. of Eugene, Oregon turned the University’s designs into the MightyPine shelving line.
The wood is more flexible than traditional shelving materials like steel so it can handle the big shakers; OSU professors tested the shelves with simulated earthquakes measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale.
The racks tested were 7 feet tall and held 30 cases of wine and are primarily designed for wine retailers, but if I ever get around to building out my unfinished basement into the ‘wine cellar/cigar lounge/no wives allowed room’…
